How to eat to get back into shape

For many women, weight gain during pregnancy is a common phenomenon considering that another life is dependant on them. This is all the more common in Indian societies where women are pampered and some times over pampered with all the ghee, butter and other rich food items which are traditionally said to ease the birth of babies though without any scientific conviction. While it is true that you can not avoid all that especially if your mother and mother in law have been religiously making you eat all that stuff for the sake of the your baby, once the baby is out, you have no excuse for bulging, sagging bellies. It is all the more important for your own self confidence as you see your stylish and figure hugging clothes lying unattended in the corner of your wardrobe because you have outgrown them during pregnancy.

Well getting into shape is not that difficult and keep in mind that starving yourself is not the answer. At this stage, especially as your baby is dependant on you it is of utmost importance that you eat a nutritious diet that will boost your energy levels, help you produce enough milk, keep your body energetic and active and at the same time help you shed those extra pounds which you have gained.

Following 10 small measures will help you get into shape without any need of starving on your part:
  1. Try to ensure that every thing you eat is of some nutritional value. Whatever you eat also goes to the little one.

  2. Your daily calorie intake should be in the range of 1500 to 1800 and it should come from a balanced diet consisting of calcium, protein, carbohyderates and iron.

  3. It is always worthwhile to have three to four well-balanced meals rather than one big meal which will only make things worse for you.

  4. Avoid processed and packed foods as far as possible as they are less nutritious and often contain chemical preservatives, artificial colouring, saturated fats, sugar, etc. which are harmful for you and your baby

  5. Stay away from all those cakes, biscuits, pastries, and processed, canned or frozen food from your diet. They all contain sugar in some form or the other. Sugar is the enemy in the battle of the bulge.

  6. Cut down on tea, coffee and stay away from alcoholic beverages and smoking. They are harmful.

  7. Make 'eating healthy' a family project so you don't feel like a typical scapegoat.

  8. It is a good idea to monitor your weight regularly. Do not lose heart if you do not see much progress initially. Have patience and you are sure to be rewarded if you continue the good effort.

  9. Add plenty of fruits and salad in your diet to keep healthy.

  10. Never use food to get over your post delivery blues. Your condition will only get worse if you try to do that. Instead try to keep yourself occupied.
