Child care and health- six months to 1 year

Having completed first six months after birth of your baby is like winning a battle. Ni better it is like winning a war. What with irregular sleeping pattern, irregular food habits and timings, irritation and general feeling of fatigue and enormity of the task of raising the child bogging down day in and day out. Just remember one thing that you are not alone in your feeling. A lot of mothers and parents go through that experience. So it is better to enjoy the experience and rest of the things will fall in place.

Following are a few of the things which you may keep in mind if your child is of this age:
  1. At this age, the urge to feel everything is very strong in babies and the way they do that is by putting every thing in their mouth. It is extremely important that you do not leave unattended things near your child which will invariably find their pride of place in her mouth. Your hair pins, buttons, small items of wardrobe, lip stick, eye brows, shortly everything is in the very reach of your little baby. Keep them out of their little domain at all costs.

  2. As your child starts crawling and taking first steps, its reach extends to the entire flat. Do not leave things unattended at floors and keep your surroundings clean and disinfected to avoid the possibility of your kid getting infected and allergies. Also be careful with electric sockets and switches. Change the ordinary switches to those having interlocking systems. As an extra precaution, put a tape on top of the switch openings to avoid little fingers getting trapped therein. Also move your night bulbs further up the wall or simply remove them.

  3. Make your flat child proof. Remove sharp objects and corners. Remember that sleek but fragile corner glass table may be aesthetic wonder but not a good idea if a small kid is round the corner, leaning on the same for support and dislodging it for her own harm.

  4. Be careful about the diet plan of your kid at this stage. Discuss the same with her pediatrician. Follow a schedule and stick to it. Monitor the height and weight of your kid to know if everything is normal. Remember that no two kids are alike. So do not get panicky if your little wonder is just above normal or on the cusp. She will recover the ground if you stick to feeding her properly.

  5. As at this stage, the risk of getting infections is very high, it is advisable to keep a medicine chest of common ailments and infections such as fever, cough, running nose etc. Do not over medicate the child as a lot of infections simply go away with the passage of time. Discuss her medication with doctor all the time. Do not try to self medicate at any time. It may be harmful for your baby.

  6. Play with your baby. They like to be cuddled and pampered. Hold them softly. Appreciate them for small little things.
