Child care and health- 1 year to 3 years
Having completed first six months after birth of your baby is like winning
a battle. Ni better it is like winning a war. What with irregular sleeping
pattern, irregular food habits and timings, irritation and general feeling
of fatigue and enormity of the task of raising the child bogging down
day in and day out. Just remember one thing that you are not alone in
your feeling. A lot of mothers and parents go through that experience.
So it is better to enjoy the experience and rest of the things will fall
in place.
By her first birthday, your little wonder would have learnt to take her
first step one her own and remember that this is her first little but determined
effort to be independent. So it is a feeling of immense joy as well as little
apprehension in the minds of many a parent. Also be prepared to face more
challenges in life as now nothings is impossible for her and so you have
to be extra careful and cautious about the way you deal with her. As she
takes her first step in her journey of life, she also gains a lot of confidence
to attain higher and higher goals and as a parent, it is your responsibility
to help her achieve that. Do not make her goal as your own. You only have
to act as a facilitator, a person who helps her in removing the road blocks
on the way and the sun will shine brighter and more splendid as days pass
by.
The following little tit bits will help you in your efforts:
- The physical activity of your child will increase tremendously during
this stage. Hence it is important to be careful about her surroundings.
Do not clutter your place. Leave enough space for her to move about
freely. Despite your best efforts, she will fall many a time and hurt
herself in the process. Do not over do her pain and injuries. So long
as they are not serious, expect them to learn and understand the pain.
This will help them in good stead as they grow up.
- Keep them engaged in activities. You need not act as a scheduler
to plan everything for her. What you can do is probably spend time with
her as much as possible as the need to be accepted and liked is very
high during this stage.
- Do not compare your kid with others nor should you chide her in front
of others. A lot of kids are very sensitive at this stage. They understand
this behavior pattern as a form of rejection.
- Do not yell at your kid under any circumstances. Be firm yet positive.
Do not be judgmental or critical. Explain the situation firmly yet gently.
Criticize the behavior and not the child. Patience is what is the most
important virtue a parent can have in these situations.
- Never make fun of your kid. They seem to internalize their pain and
suffering and this leads to lot of abnormal behavior patterns in future.
- As the kid is growing and developing during this stage very fast,
her dietary requirements are also very important. Include lots of nutritious
items in her diet. Plenty of protein, iron, carbohydrates and vitamins
are extremely vital for her. Milk and milk products are good repository
of calcium so they should be staple diet. Also pulses, fruits and salads
are good for the development of your kid.
- As this is the stage for your child to grow and develop bonds, it
is important that you spend time with her. Take her out to parks and
she will learn about flowers and trees and her environment, take her
to zoo and she will learn about animals and their lives. Read her good
stories. She will respond to them surely. She will also learn the good
habit of reading. Read her news paper and she will appreciate to know
about her surroundings.
- A lot of kids at this stage love to splash in water. Allow her the
luxury of spending fun time while taking a bath. You may also take her
to her small swimming pool and she will simply love it.
